The Beard Auction
The Beard has been officially listed on EBAY!
The Auction is OVER! It netted $100 from the winner (name withheld) and some pledges!
Here is my original rant (not the one from the ebay listing)
I was reading about all the cuts in education and it hits kind of close to the bone on a few of accounts. My mom was a teacher and my daughter Jen is a teacher now. I have always felt that a lot of people get their education then want to deny someone else theirs. If you went to a private school, good for you. Your parents or someone paid for it and I'm sure you feel that you got a better education than did those in the public school system. The problem with that thinking is that some private schools systems teach based on an agenda. Do you really think that a school run by a church is going to teach anything that might be contradictory to what they preach? The other problem is they can NOT handle the number of young people that need quality education today. In the news recently a Catholic school is denying a child entry because her parents are lesbians (see story). There are other problems inherant with private schools, but in general they do pretty well IF you can afford it. I just saw this article too and it made me happy I'm doing this.
I also feel that there is a destructive force in our country that is trying to remove anything that is "social" in nature. They try to label things that help society in general as "socialist" or "communist". I think lifting up society is a good thing and I don't care what you call me. We need education. We need health care for everyone. We need to be able to retire with dignity at some age.
I am going to donate to the San Mateo Unified School District and I am asking your help. To make it fun and "an event" I have decided to auction off my beard. Actually its a goatee. The way it will work is the person that pledges the highest will get the goatee. What pledge means is you send the money you pledge even if you don't win. If I don't get a pledge of $100 I will pledge that amount myself and do as I damn please with my beard. I will expect you to send a check to me made out to San Mateo Unified School District with a memo on it that it is a gift. I'm not a CPA, but I'll bet its tax deductible.
Here is the before pictures

And here are the " before the shave pictures" for the auction winner.

And it made me feel so "Pirate Like"

Then later that evening (4/1/2010) he shaved it off!

Ok so I look a little different

But I'm still a pirate!
I'm on Facebook. Look me up.
